Welcome to the Pacific Northwest Home Gardener

This site is dedicated to home gardeners everywhere who plan, dream, and work very hard in their chosen garden areas. We are long time gardeners here at our family farm, Grand Point Farm. Our farm is located in the upper foothills on the North side of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. From the North pasture, on a clear day, we can look across the Strait of Juan de Fuca into Southwestern Canada. We have worked in clay, sand, rocky and fine loam soils. Each soil type has different characterists and we have learned to grow crops in each soil type to crop success. For the novice home gardener, we explain what books to read, and what and how to select proper garden tools and equipment to be used in lawns, hedges, gardens, orchards, landscaping and around farm buildings and driveways. Then list and provide links to many useful gardening books and magazine subscriptions available to the home gardener and to farming equipment supplies. And of major importance, is the proper tilling of the soil and the exact timing of planting seeds.

This website, for home gardeners, with livestock, is a place to shop for some of your gardening and livestock books, farming equipment, and farming magazine subscriptions, gardening tools and equipment, garden supplies, gardening information, and answers to questions. We cover growing vegetable gardening at home, raising and caring for our livestock, organic gardening, soil fertility, and plant propagation. We cover growing potatoes, fields of corn and grain, hayfields, and growing various fruits, and berries in orchards and kitchengardens. Much of our gardening areas are fenced to keep livestock and wild animals from eating and damaging our crops. We pay special attention to the soil tilth and amended the soil to bring in the necessary nutrition and correct the acidity. On our webpages, we list and link to many excellent horticulture books and magazine subscriptions. In addition for home gardeners, we cover lots of practical how-to do gardening and home improvements. This includes fencing to protect your gardens, building stone terraces, building stone and brick walls, laying patios, and building arbors and gazebos. Plus building garden compost.

We particularly like to offer books, tools, equipment, and magazine informational articles and/or links on how-to make or do things yourself. We offer practical, hands-on instructions designed to help you learn how to master dozens of country living skills quickly and easily. Our emphasis will be on Pacific Northwest gardening and farming. Our maritime climate in the western foothills and lowlands presents a unique kind of challenge to home gardeners and farmers. The Pacific Ocean, and the Puget Sound while moderating our weather, works combinations with our surrounding mountains to cause our weather to change quickly. But, then because of our latitude, we can receive up to eighteen hours of daylight and sunlight during the summer months. Vegetable gardening then flourished. We learned to plant our garden crops as early as the soil will permit, selecting those crop seeds that will withstand the cold soil and a wet spring. We also recommend and use raised beds for many garden crops. This is especially useful in early spring to promote better drainage following the spring rains. Gardener patience, skills that we teach, and timing of planting seeds is the key to gardening.
